PhD student in the field of circular economy: The Faculty of Economics and the Research Centre for Economics and Corporate Sustainability (CEDON) of KU Leuven invite applications for a PhD candidate in the field of Environmental Economics and Circular Economy. The selected candidate will embark on a path to PhD studies, focusing on the transition to a more sustainable and circular textile value chain in Belgium and abroad from a legal and economic perspective. Designation: PhD student in circular economy

Research area: Environmental economics and circular economy, with a particular focus on the transition to a sustainable and circular textile value chain in Belgium and abroad from a legal and economic perspective.

Location: Campus of KU Leuven in Brussels

Authorization/Qualification:

  • MSc degree in Economics, Industrial Engineering, Applied Economics or (Civil/Bio)Engineering or equivalent
  • Strong academic record with excellent results (with distinction or with distinction) in previous studies
  • Preference will be given to candidates with a research master’s degree in economics (e.g. Master of Advanced Studies in Economics at KU Leuven)
  • Strong interest in quantitative research methods including statistics, data analysis, analytical and numerical economic modelling
  • Fluent written and spoken English and good reporting and presentation skills
  • Willingness to work in an interdisciplinary manner with legal doctoral students and academics

job description:
The selected candidate will be expected to address key research questions such as the current economic importance of the Belgian textile value chain, its material footprint and its environmental impact. In addition, the estimated impacts of various regulatory and self-regulatory circular economy (CE) innovations at EU and Belgian level on economic activity, employment, prices and environmental outcomes will be investigated. There will also be an opportunity to contribute to the fine-tuning of these regulatory and self-regulatory CE innovations to improve environmental effectiveness, economic well-being, legal certainty and coherence. The role will include limited teaching activities and supervision of a limited number of Master’s theses in the field of environmental and sustainable economics at the KU Leuven sites in Brussels and Leuven.
