PhD position in Theoretical Biology: The University of Helsinki offers a fully funded 4-year PhD position in theoretical evolutionary biology at the Viikki campus. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Dr. Piret Avila and focus on the evolution of ageing and life course theory.

Research area: Modelling the evolution of aging, diversity of aging patterns throughout the tree of life, gender differences in aging

Location: University of Helsinki, Viikki Campus, Finland

Eligibility/Qualification:

• Master’s degree in Biology, mathematics, physics, economics or a related field
• Strong analytical and quantitative skills
• Excellent written and oral communication skills in English
• Strong interest in evolutionary biology (even if the background is not biological)

Job description:
The selected PhD student will develop theoretical work on the evolution of aging and life course theory, focusing on understanding aging patterns in different organisms and exploring sex differences in aging, using methods from theoretical evolutionary biology, including evolutionary game theory, adaptive dynamics, population genetics, and optimization theory.
