Breaking change for Window Server 2022 Image Users with .NET 6

Azure Marketplace media images for Windows Server 2022 currently include .NET 6, but will not in the future. Do not include the .NET version in your image. (.NET 8 and above are not included in the image). Therefore, if you previously used an Azure Marketplace image to include the .NET 6 runtime, you will now need to handle .NET deployment yourself.

November 12th^Day .NET 6 will be released in 2024. End of support. However, based on customer feedback, we have decided to give customers more time to process .NET 8 runtime deployments and upgrade to .NET 8. Microsoft will provide security updates for .NET 6 in Azure Marketplace media images after the official shutdown. The application date is an additional six months until May 13, 2025. This only applies to Azure Marketplace media for Windows Server 2022.

.NET 6 will be removed from all Azure Marketplace Windows Server 2022 media on May 13th.^Day2025. If you are affected and have not migrated to .NET 8, you must take steps to complete your changes before May 2025.

If you are currently using the Windows Server 2022 Marketplace media image and are dependent on the media for the .NET 6 runtime, you will be affected by this change.

You will not be affected in the following situations:

1. You are not using a Windows Server 2022 Marketplace media image.
2. Your service or application is not using .NET 6.
3. I’m using .NET 6 on Windows Server 2022, but I’m not relying on media to provide the .NET 6 runtime.

Required Action

To avoid service outages, use this time to transition to .NET 8 if your services require .NET. Unlike .NET 6, .NET 8 is not included with Windows Server and must be installed.
