The Finnish Cultural Foundation is providing an additional €1 million for applied research supporting the mental health of children and adolescents.

A special focus of “Million for Science” is supporting the mental health of children and young people. Applications may address the topic from a variety of perspectives, but research is especially encouraged to proactively identify scientifically sound solutions to support the mental health of children and adolescents, thereby reducing the need for mental health services. You can receive support for material costs or fees needed in addition to the work. Additional €1 million grants will be awarded to no more than five research projects.

Applications are open to all fields of science and an interdisciplinary approach is important.

Ineligible Expenses

  • Grants will not be awarded:
    • through wage increases or incentive subsidies.
    • on social grounds
    • Available for basic (bachelor’s and master’s) degree students for work grants or student exchanges involved in their studies.
    • For overseas postdoctoral research, excluding visits lasting less than one semester (less than 6 months)
    • To cover general printing costs
    • for internship

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants can be working groups of multiple researchers, but cannot be universities or research institutes. Involving young people in the planning, implementation and interpretation of results is considered essential. All scientific work on the project is paid by work grants rather than salaries.

Evaluation criteria

  • All grant applications are peer reviewed.
  • Central Fund October round applications are assessed by over 50 committees, which each year invite two external experts as members.
  • Strict guidelines apply to the application evaluation process to ensure as much fairness as possible. Selected grants may be canceled if, after the decision-making process, a lack of fairness is discovered.
  • Applications will be treated confidentially. The expert’s identity is not disclosed, nor does the expert justify his or her decisions in writing. Therefore, no feedback can be provided on your application.
