The Canadian Polar Knowledge Association is seeking entries for its Northern Science Award, which recognizes individuals or teams who have made a significant contribution to advancing knowledge and understanding of Canada’s North.

In the spirit of the previous International Year of Polar Research (2007-2008), this award recognizes the changing ways in which knowledge is produced and shared, and the impact that research has on the Arctic, its communities and its people.

Product Information

  • The winner will receive a Centennial Medal and a cash prize of $10,000.

Qualification criteria

  • Anyone can nominate an individual or team. Nominators must provide the selection committee with:
    • A letter of recommendation (500 words or less) that clearly demonstrates the candidate’s accomplishments.
    • Supporting documentation that may include one or more of the following:
      • Self-introduction (maximum 10 pages).
      • For example, evidence of scientific achievements in Northern science, such as research reports, publications, other awards and honours, professional and public service, descriptions of activities (e.g. oral storytelling events or performances), or media links demonstrating the sharing of Indigenous knowledge (e.g. short films, podcasts).
      • Evidence of the application and impact of new knowledge.
  • Three letters of support highlighting achievements.

Selection criteria

  • As part of the selection process, the selection committee evaluates candidates based on a combination of achievements, including:
    • Wide recognition of the quality and importance of the knowledge created.
    • It has contributed significantly to the way knowledge is produced and shared in the Northern region.
    • Educating or engaging Northerners in research, projects or initiatives.
    • Well-suited to driving Northern priorities with a focus on the impact of knowledge.
