Welcome to the October 2024 update. This month, we’re excited to announce that Clean Data with Copilot in Excel is now available in Excel for the web. Additionally, the GROUPBY and PIVOTBY functions are now generally available in Excel for Windows, Mac, and the web. Focus Cell is also now available to Insider users of Excel for Windows.

Excel for the web

Clean your data with Copilot in Excel

Copilot in Excel lets you organize your data with just one click. Clean Data detects text inconsistencies, number formatting issues, and extra white space and provides solutions for them. SThis means selecting the Clean Data option in the Data tab of the ribbon. Or, interact with the pop-up banner to get started.. Read more here >

GROUPBY and PIVOTBY functions

Excel for Windows

Focus Cell (Insider)

Use Focus Cell to make the active cell more visible in your worksheet. Focus Cell applies a vivid highlight to the corresponding row and column of the active cell and increases the border thickness of the active cell. This makes the active cell more visible and makes it easier to identify data in the same row and column. Read more here >

color picker

Excel’s color picker now includes a feature that shows whether the selected color contrasts appropriately with the background. When you hover your mouse over a color, you’ll see a tooltip indicating whether that color has “low contrast” or “good contrast” against the background. You can also turn on the “High Contrast Only” toggle to filter and display only colors with sufficient contrast.

New templates in Excel

We’re excited to introduce three new Python features in Excel templates. To access, go to: File > New. Then type “python” in the template search bar. Python in Excel templates are currently only available in English.

1. Python in Excel tutorial: learnLearn about Python in Excel and how you can use it to analyze data directly within an Excel spreadsheet.

Draw and Hold Behavior (Insider)

To create cleaner lines and shapes, you can now use draw and hold actions. Draw a line, arrow, or shape (such as a circle, oval, triangle, square, rectangle, diamond, pentagon, or hexagon) all at once, hold the pen in place for a few milliseconds, and watch how the shape changes. It has been changed to a cleaner version. You can rotate or resize the shape by pressing and dragging. Read more here >

Excel for Mac and iOS

Switch seamlessly between Apple devices with Handoff support (Insider)

Handoff is an Apple feature that lets you continue working on content while switching from one Apple device to another. For example, if you’re working on an Excel spreadsheet on your iPhone and want to switch to your Mac, Handoff allows you to do so in just a few clicks. Read more here >
