The starting salary for this position is £62,156 / approximately US$79,374 including all allowances.

About MAG

MAG (Mines Advisory Group) is an international humanitarian organisation based in Manchester, UK, operating in 32 countries. We clear landmines and unexploded ordnance to free up safe and productive land for people, and work to reduce the threat of armed violence by helping governments to safely manage weapons and ammunition. In 1997, MAG was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for our work in fighting for the Anti-Personnel Mine Convention.

About the role

Our Technical Field Managers are at the heart of our work and actively lead our teams of locally recruited personnel to safely deliver our life-saving mine clearance and EOD projects. You must be willing to lead from the front, be responsible for the day-to-day management of our technical teams and be involved in all aspects of MAG’s life-saving work including administration, team cash books, procurement of equipment, representing MAG to local communities and government, operational planning and reporting. Capacity building and people management are a core area of ​​this role. Tasks are based in remote areas, in challenging contexts far from home amenities, but the life-saving impact of the work on local communities is very real and rewarding. This is a fantastic opportunity to be involved in MAG’s life-saving work on a daily basis.

About you

You must hold a recognised and relevant qualification in EOD/mine clearance and have extensive experience in leading effective conventional mine clearance operations, ideally in an integrated clearance environment (manual and mechanised) with experience in using machinery to prepare ground for mine clearance. You will need excellent diplomatic and communication skills to be able to effectively build relationships with our national partners and authorities. You must have excellent people management skills and a proven track record of leading, motivating and managing a diverse team. You must also be able to incorporate technical knowledge and clearance objectives into proposals and reports and have a proven track record of training and building the capacity of locally recruited staff. Fluency in written and spoken English is essential. Finally, you must be willing to take on the challenges of working in developing countries and work as part of a flexible and dedicated team to save lives in the communities that need it most.

About the Sri Lanka Program

MAG’s Sri Lanka program addresses the issues facing mine-affected communities by facilitating efficient, effective and safe land clearance. Sri Lanka’s civil war ended in 2009, but landmines and explosive remnants of war (ERW) continue to threaten communities in the northern and eastern districts. MAG employs a mix of manual and mechanical teams to maximize the efficiency of the land clearance process in the country. By making land safe and returning it to affected communities, MAG is helping the people of Sri Lanka rebuild their lives, livelihoods and futures after the civil war. MAG Sri Lanka has expanded its program activities by adding Weapons and Ammunition Management (WAM) activities to the program in 2019.
