Product information Three poets will be honored: 1st place: $1,000 2nd place: $750 3rd place: $500 Eligibility Criteria Any poet who meets one of the criteria below on the application deadline for a given year may apply. american citizen Have resided in the United States for 10 years prior to the submission deadline; Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) status, Temporary Protected Status (TPS), Legally Permanent Status (LPS), or any subsequent category designated by U.S. authorities as granting similar enhanced status to non-citizens residing in the United States. Ineligibility Criteria Poets who have studied with a poetry examiner on a full-time accredited course within the last three years are not eligible to apply. Current Academy of American Poets employees and superintendents are not eligible to submit. Application Requirements Poets may submit only one poem for consideration. Submitted poetry must be original work and not previously published. Submitted poems must not contain any information that could reveal the identity of the author. Poetry may be submitted in Spanish but must be accompanied by an English translation. Performing or reading poets may submit an audio recording of their submission. Entries must be uploaded to Submittable as a .doc, .docx or .pdf file. Most audio formats are accepted for entries by live or reading poets. There is no admission fee. The Academy of American Poets is not responsible for poems not received due to user error. Applicants can log into Submittable to confirm receipt of their submission. Applicants may submit their poems elsewhere at the same time, but must immediately notify the Academy of American Poets if their poems have been accepted for publication by another publisher. The Academy of American Poets cannot consider revisions to poems while the competition is in progress. The decision of the Academy of American Poets regarding eligibility is final.
