The Western Balkans Fund (WBF) is pleased to announce the opening of the fifth round of WBF Mobility Grant Calls, which aims to foster regional cooperation and mobility within the Western Balkans region.

WBF will support the personal and professional growth of local individuals by providing them with the means to explore the region and new perspectives. Encourage them to step out of their comfort zones, embrace diversity and develop a local mindset. The initiative aims to foster regional cooperation through people-to-people connections by encouraging active participation in local and regional issues and challenges. This creates a great platform for individuals to become agents of positive change, creating a sense of responsibility to create a more inclusive, equitable and sustainable World Bank Region.

  • The mobility grant scheme for individuals specifically aims to:
    • WB Strengthening intercultural dialogue and knowledge exchange between regional experts and experts.
    • Supports professional mobility (i.e. regional travel for professional purposes) of artists, cultural professionals, academics, journalists and activists.
    • Create connections between experts to support regional collaboration.

funds information

  • Grants requested under this Call for Proposals may not exceed 3,000 EUR.
  • The period of stay or removal action cannot exceed six months, including the reporting period.

qualifying activity

  • The following is an illustrative and non-exhaustive list of activities that can be implemented within the framework of the mobility grant scheme for individuals.
    • Research or Research Exchange: Assists individuals in pursuing research or research opportunities within the WB region. This may involve short-term or long-term stays (up to six months) in laboratories at universities, research institutes or other institutions.
    • Training and Capacity Building: Assist individuals in attending workshops, seminars, training programs or courses related to their field of study or career. These activities aim to strengthen your knowledge, skills, competencies and networks with colleagues in the WB region.
    • Internships and Work Placements: We assist individuals/journalists/artists to undertake internships or work placements in organizations or institutions within the WB region. This activity should provide valuable hands-on experience and exposure to a variety of work environments.
    • Conference and Event Attendance: We assist individuals in attending conferences, symposiums or academic events within the WB area. These activities allow individuals to present their research, network with experts in the field, and stay up to date on the latest developments.
    • Arts and Culture Projects: We support individuals’ participation in art/film/music/theatre or media festivals, including artist residencies, participation in exhibitions, performances, or collaborations with artists from various contracting parties. These initiatives should promote cultural exchange and creativity.
    • Policy Development and Advocacy: Provides more specific support to individuals involved in policy development, advocacy or governance. This may include study visits, research projects or placements in international organizations/media or other institutions.
    • Field Research and Data Collection: Assists individuals conducting field research or data collection in various geographic locations within the WB region. This allows individuals to achieve their research goals and gather diverse perspectives and data.
    • Collaborative Projects and Partnerships: Assists individuals in promoting collaborative projects and partnerships between individuals, organizations or institutions in different parts of the WB region. This promotes cross-border cooperation and knowledge exchange.
    • Community Involvement: We support individuals who wish to get involved in community projects in various parts of the WB region. This allows individuals to contribute to social causes and gain a broader perspective on local issues.
    • Sports business and exchange: We support individuals who wish to participate in local sports events (competition, championships, exchange activities).

ineligible activity

  • The following types of work are not eligible for funding under this currency:
    • Activities Covered in WBF’s Annual Request for Proposals
    • Actions without elements of regional exchange and cooperation

Eligibility Criteria

  • All applicants must comply with the following eligibility criteria:
    • You must be at least 18 years of age by the application closing date.
    • Have citizenship of one of the following contracting parties to the WBF: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia.
    • Must be a member of a statutory public or private organization established in one or more WBF Contracting Parties.
