PhD position in Lung Models: A PhD position is available for a project entitled “3D in vitro lung models: simulation of the respiratory effect thanks to a multifunctional bioreactor”. This research is carried out jointly at CIC biomaGUNE and Leartiker under the direction of Dr. Dorleta Jimenez de Aberasturi and Dr. Ane Miren Zaldua. The focus of the project is to develop novel 3D in vitro human lung models using bioengineered tissue and a custom-made bioreactor to mimic realistic respiratory movements.

Authorization/Qualification

• Master’s degree in Biomedical engineering, engineering, materials science, biotechnology, biology/biochemistry, chemistry or related fields.
• Experience in 3D printing, bioreactor design, material synthesis, 3D in vitro models and/or cell culture is desirable.
• Interest in interdisciplinary work and motivation to learn from different scientific fields.
• Ability to work in an international environment.
• Good interpersonal skills and knowledge of written and oral English communication.

job description

The successful candidate will be involved in the fabrication of 3D in vitro lung models. This includes:

• Production of fully functional tissues using hybrid light-curing bioresins in combination with bioprinting techniques.
• Design and development of a bioreactor to simulate the respiratory movements and forces of cells.
• Defining mechanical stimulation protocols and monitoring tissue growth.
• Conducting mechanoadaptive cell marker studies to create realistic 3D models.
• Validation of 3D models as platforms for drug testing.
