Scholarship Description: The PhD position aims to delve into the microbial diversity and metabolic versatility of microorganisms responsible for biological phosphorus removal. The research will involve evaluating bioreactor operations and applying advanced omics techniques, including metagenomics, metaproteomics, and metabolomics. The selected candidate will be part of the Biotechnology section at TU Delft, an inclusive and innovative team committed to exploring wastewater treatment processes.

The PhD candidate will be enrolled in the TU Delft Graduate School, which offers a comprehensive Doctoral Education Programme designed to develop both transferable and research-specific skills. The project will be supervised by Asst. Prof. Samarpita Roy and Prof. Mark van Loosdrecht.

Eligibility:

  • MSc in Environmental/Chemical Engineering, Microbiology, or Bioinformatics.
  • Strong interest and background in biological processes and biotechnologies.
  • Proven laboratory experience through courses, internships, or previous work.
  • Scientific attitude, analytical skills, and a hands-on mentality.
  • Independent, self-motivated, and collaborative.
  • Excellent spoken and written English.

Nice-to-haves:

  • Experience in designing/operating lab-scale bio-reactors.
  • Knowledge in metagenomics and bioinformatics pipelines.
  • Proficiency in Linux, R, or Python programming.
