Open PhD positions in mathematics: The Weierstrass Institute for Applied Analysis and Stochastics (WIAS) in Berlin is currently offering open PhD positions in mathematics with a focus on optimal transport and robust machine learning. The positions revolve around computational OT, gradient flows, deep generative models, Bayesian inference, kernel methods, distributional robustness, generalization, optimization, robustness in reinforcement learning and control, and the convergence of robustness with causality or fairness.

Open PhD positions in Mathematics: Optimization and Machine Learning

Title: Doctoral student

Research area:
Research areas include optimal transport and gradient flow applications in machine learning and optimization, probabilistic machine learning, Bayesian inference, generative models, robustness and generalization in machine learning, causal inference, and robust optimization.

Location: Berlin, Germany

Eligibility/Qualification:
The ideal candidate has a background in machine learning and/or applied mathematics (e.g. optimization, analysis of PDE/SDE), with a Master’s degree and relevant research experience. This should be demonstrated by high-quality technical reports or publications in reputable publications such as NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, AISTATS, UAI, AAAI, CoLT, JMLR, TMLR, etc. Candidates with strong applied or industrial experience, such as deep learning, will also be considered.

Job description:
The position offers the opportunity to join a leading research institution known for its strengths in mathematical optimization, dynamic systems, and applied mathematics. Candidates will have the opportunity to collaborate with partners at top institutions and engage in a vibrant and diverse research environment provided by the Berlin Mathematical School, a joint graduate school of Berlin’s three major universities. The office space is located in downtown Berlin, a culturally rich and diverse city that offers ample opportunities for professional and personal growth.
