Migrate ADAL apps to MSAL with enhanced insights

We are excited to announce important updates to the sign-in integration in the Microsoft Entra admin center, a critical tool for organizations transitioning from Azure Active Directory Authentication Library (ADAL) to Microsoft Authentication Library (MSAL). These updates aim to streamline the ADAL migration process by providing comprehensive insights into ADAL application-related data.

Why is this important?

we announce ADAL reached end-of-life in June 2020 and will no longer receive any security updates starting in June 2023. This means that applications that use ADAL will not be able to take advantage of the latest security features and will be vulnerable to future security threats. We recommend that all applications that use ADAL migrate to MSAL to improve the security posture and resiliency of authentication and authorization for client applications.

MSAL supports the latest security features of Microsoft Entra ID, such as Managed Identity, Continuous Access Evaluation (CAE), and Passkey. What’s new in the Login Integration Document?

The Sign-ins workbook has been redesigned for administrators who need a centralized, more detailed view of the applications using ADAL within their tenant. This additional insight can help you identify, investigate, and validate ADAL applications for successful migration to MSAL.

1. Comprehensive login log aggregation: The integration document now consolidates logs of different types of login events, including interactive, non-interactive, and service principal logins.
2. Enhanced data visualization: We have updated the report with new aggregated metrics to enable a complete view of logins across your ADAL application. To support your specific analysis needs, the workbook supports applying custom filters and queries. This flexibility allows you to focus on the information that is most important to your ADAL migration effort.
3. Integration recommendations with Microsoft Entra: You can now access this Sign-Ins workbook directly from the ADAL to MSAL referral page to drill down into the list of ADAL applications listed on the referral details page. To use the workbook for Microsoft Entra ID, you will need a Microsoft Entra ID tenant with a P1 license.
