Introducing Microsoft Purview Data Security pay-as-you-go pricing for your non-Microsoft 365 data

Microsoft Purview is a comprehensive set of solutions that help organizations protect and manage their data wherever it resides. Microsoft Purview’s integration of data security and governance capabilities reflects our belief that customers need a simpler approach to their data.

Microsoft Purview Data Security combines data context and user context to help customers dynamically protect their data throughout its lifecycle.

Data security features, including Microsoft Purview Information Protection and Insider Risk Management, are already loved and utilized by customers around the world for their Microsoft 365 data. November 2023 We’re extending these capabilities to data sources beyond Microsoft 365, such as cloud storage apps (Box, Dropbox, Google Drive), cloud services (AWS, Azure), and Microsoft Fabric (Power BI). As we continue to invest in protecting your data beyond Microsoft 365, we’re excited to announce that Microsoft’s data security features are moving from free to paid public preview. This new pricing model will take effect from November 1, 2024.

There are two pricing components to support your data security needs: 1) Information protection through asset-based meters and 2) Insider risk management through processing unit meters. Together they serve as complementary means of executing business and managing costs.

Microsoft Purview Information Protection You are billed based on the number of assets protected, such as documents, emails, and other data files. Assets are identified and classified according to their sensitivity and level of protection required. This classification can be performed manually by the user or automatically using data classification tools within Microsoft Purview. You then apply policies to these assets to control how they are handled, shared, and protected. These policies can enforce things like encryption, access restrictions, and breach detection. Claims are calculated based on the number of assets protected under these policies.

Microsoft Purview Insider Risk Management You are billed on a per Data Security Processing Unit (DSPU) basis. Insider risk management generates insights, alerts, and cases by processing activities that correspond to indicators selected in a policy. Billing is calculated based on the number of processing units required for the metrics selected in the policy. A DSPU is defined as the compute required to process 10,000 user activity logs.

Pricing model timeline
This new pricing model will take effect on November 1, 2024 for all customers using data security solutions accessible from their Azure bill. Customers will see an update to Microsoft Purview pricing on November 1, 2024. Please see the page reflecting the details of this blog.
