Today the Arc Jumpstart team is excited to announce the general availability of ArcBox 3.0!

ArcBox has been our most deployed product since its initial release in 2021 and is widely used by field sellers and the Jumpstart community. ArcBox remains an invaluable resource for IT professionals, DataOps teams, and DevOps practitioners, providing a comprehensive solution for evaluating how to deploy, manage, and operate Arc-enabled environments.

Full release

In this full release, we wanted to take our time in designing and addressing some of the biggest pain points that users have shared with us. We prioritized ease of deployment, stability, security, troubleshooting experience, and environmental footprint along with additional Arc-related features, along with other implementations and concepts.

  • Cost savings across all three flavors of ArcBox
  • Automatically log in to client VMs – Users no longer need to interactively log in to the ArcBox client VM to complete Jumpstart automation.
  • We’ve strengthened our security posture by removing the Service Principal Name (SPN) user requirement in favor of managed identities at deployment time.
  • Switch from Chocolatey to WinGet as your solution package manager. WinGet, Microsoft’s command-line package manager for Windows, is now included in ArcBox to simplify software installation and management.
  • PowerShell 7 is now the default scripting language for running automation scripts, hosting the latest features and improvements that significantly improve the efficiency, performance, and reliability of automation processes compared to the original Windows PowerShell.
  • PowerShell 7 also introduces several performance improvements, including: Foreach-Object -Parallel A command that enables parallel execution of script blocks.
  • Introducing declarative configuration based on PowerShell Desired State Configuration (DSC) for more reliable and consistent automation.
  • Introducing a new, comprehensive, integrated test suite for infrastructure validation using Pester.
  • We’ve added modularization to Logon-Script as a PowerShell module, making it easier to contribute and troubleshoot.
  • As we continue to invest in the Bicep language for deploying infrastructure on Azure, ArcBox now provides a more streamlined and readable infrastructure code experience, including a sample Bicep parameter file that replaces the previous JSON parameter file. Bicep parameters simplify the creation and management of Azure Resource Manager templates, making your infrastructure code more intuitive and less error-prone.
  • Update Windows and Ubuntu VHD images.
  • Azure Update Manager environment.
  • A modernized Azure Monitor Workbook that provides enhanced monitoring and visualization capabilities for IT professionals.
  • PowerShell remoting over SSH is available for Windows and Linux computers.
  • SSH for Arc-enabled servers – Provides SSH-based PowerShell remote connectivity to Arc-enabled servers without the need for public IP addresses or additional open ports.
  • SSH Posture Control (automatic configuration via Azure Policy) – Audit and configure SSH server security posture on supported Linux distributions including Ubuntu, Red Hat, and Azure Linux.
  • An on-demand SQL migration assessment environment that provides detailed assessments for migrating SQL databases to Azure.
  • ArcBox has now switched from Cluster API (CAPI) and Cluster API Provider Azure (CAPZ) to k3s, a lightweight Kubernetes distribution, to manage Kubernetes clusters. By switching to k3s, DevOps teams can benefit from a lighter, more efficient, and easier-to-manage Kubernetes solution, reducing overhead and improving performance in resource-constrained environments.
  • ArcBox now includes Istio, a powerful service mesh that facilitates blue/green deployments and load balancing. Previously, ArcBox used Open Service Mesh (OSM) to demonstrate traffic splitting, but OSM was deprecated in May 2023.

ArcBox Flavor

In this release, we have decided to deprecate the old “Full” flavor of ArcBox. We have invested several improvements and optimizations into the existing “ITPros,” “DevOps,” and “DateOps” ArcBox flavors to maintain consistency and ease of maintenance while maintaining the core experience for all user profiles.
