INSO background

Founded in 2011, the International NGO Safety Organisation (INSO) is an international non-governmental organisation that supports humanitarian workers by building safety coordination platforms in unsafe contexts. INSO provides a range of free services to registered NGOs, including real-time incident tracking, analytical reports, safety-related data and maps, crisis management support, and staff orientation and training.

INSO supports more than 1,200 NGOs every day, operating in 17 of the world’s most insecure countries. INSO is registered in the Netherlands and has its headquarters in The Hague, the international city of peace and justice.

Job overview

As an Information Manager, you will support NGOs’ security and access analysis needs by maintaining the Analysis & Research Team’s (ART) internal system for global data collection and developing high-quality data visualization products. You will have a good knowledge of spatial data, graphic design tools and information management to make the most of the Conflict & Humanitarian Data Centre’s data. This position is based at our headquarters in The Hague and reports to the Director of the Analysis & Research Team.

Main responsibilities

  • Manage internal data integration, sorting and categorization processes for global analytics products.
  • Providing and creating maps and other visualizations for global analytics products.
  • Develop templates and formats for global analytics products using Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Microsoft Sway, and Power BI.
  • Identify, document and inform the Technology & Innovation Team (DTI) of significant in-country data discrepancies or inconsistencies discovered during the creation of global analytics products.
  • Coordinate the design, development and production of tailored, comparative and thematic analyses with country programmes.
  • Identify and integrate innovative developments in data visualization and analysis to improve the quality of INSO products, especially for thematic research projects.
  • Maintain a positive working relationship with INSO’s information managers across platforms.
  • Provide ad hoc support to the Policy, Advocacy & Communications Team (PAC) in collecting and demonstrating evidence-based products.
  • Work with the Senior Information Manager on technical advice, global standards and internal synergies.
  • Promote and maintain a clear, consistent and logical structure for internal documentation related to the ART.
  • Subscribe and help maintain and promote the integrity, reliability and consistency of INSO data.

Mandatory requirements

  • Fluent English skills (required).
  • Right to live and work in the Netherlands.
  • Bachelor’s degree in (spatial) data science, information management, GIS or a relevant field.
  • Technical knowledge of GIS software such as ArcGIS, presentation and design tools especially Adobe InDesign and Illustrator, data visualization tools especially Power BI, and advanced MS Excel skills.
  • At least 4 years of professional experience.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with others while meeting tight deadlines.

Desirable

  • Experience with ArcGIS scripting.
  • Experience the Data Analysis Expressions (DAX) language.
  • Familiarity with writing code/scripts.
  • Familiarity with SQL, including creating queries and manipulating data.
  • Relevant experience working for NGOs, international organizations, think tanks or research consultancies.
  • Master’s degree in (spatial) data science, information management, GIS or a relevant field.
  • Existing experience with conflict or crime datasets.
  • Experience in mapping security incidents.

General terms and conditions of business

12-month full-time fixed-term contract (renewable) based in The Hague, the Netherlands. It is a Dutch contract based on Dutch social security and tax rules with a gross salary of €4,800 per month + 8% holiday allowance (vakantiegeld) and 2.5 days annual leave per month. We offer Basic Premium ONVZ health insurance in the Netherlands and travel insurance for business trips. Relocation allowance is available. This position requires the right to live and work in the Netherlands.
