Purpose of the position

Contribute to ACAPS’ Middle East Hub’s timely analysis of the humanitarian crisis to enable crisis responders to make better-informed decisions. The intelligence analysts will primarily support the Hub’s analysis of the humanitarian crisis in Syria, but are expected to participate in the creation of ACAPS’ Middle East Hub’s overall data products through data collection, secondary data review, and analysis generation.

These are positions for individuals interested in pursuing a career in the humanitarian sector. They should have a particular interest in qualitative and quantitative analysis, humanitarian planning and promoting evidence-based decision-making. The Information Analyst(s) will develop valuable skills in analytical techniques, including secondary data review, data management and collaborative analysis.

Tasks

Role and responsibilities

General responsibilities

Monitor information on regional political, economic, social and humanitarian developments related to the humanitarian crisis in Syria and adjacent areas and feed it into the Syria Core Dataset, while supporting the further development of other analytical products.

Special responsibilities

Research and analysis

  • Review, compile and synthesize assessments, reports and information products on humanitarian crises in Syria and related contexts to understand the information landscape and current gaps.
  • Daily monitoring of information sources and updating of information in the Air table based on the prescribed analysis framework.
  • Ensure monitoring feeds into the Syria Core Dataset and other analytics products.
  • Contribute to the design and delivery of cross-industry and thematic analysis products, including all phases of analysis creation such as ideation, research and design, and coordinate technical support to other teams within ACAPS.
  • Support other team members in developing analytics products.

Methodology and quality assurance

  • Contribute to the establishment and maintenance of the team’s information management systems and ensure that internal and external information requests are handled in a structured and efficient manner. This includes maintaining the ACAPS internal monitoring tracking sheet.
  • Contribute to the creation of tools that facilitate ongoing analysis and sharing of data and information that support fact-based decision-making.

Coordination and networking

  • Maintain a network of key people at regional and local levels and conduct regular interviews to integrate and support analysis and research.
  • Participate in various humanitarian analysis meetings/workshops on behalf of ACAPS.
  • The Information Analyst(s) will work with in-country field researchers and assist in coordinating data collection requests (through surveys, interviews with key informants, etc.) to develop analytical products both internally and in support of partner organizations.
  • The Information Analyst(s) assist in managing information provided by field researchers in accordance with ACAPS data protocols.

Any other mutually agreed tasks can be added to the job description depending on project needs.

Qualifications

Competencies

Professional skills

  • Relevant Master’s degree (or Bachelor’s degree with at least 3 years of experience in relevant sectors), preferably in humanitarian aid, social sciences (anthropology, sociology, economics, political science, psychology, geography, etc.), international relations, public health, epidemiology or other relevant training.
  • Previous experience (at least 2 years) in research, analysis, information management, advocacy or other relevant experience in the humanitarian sector or related fields (development, international relations, social sciences, etc.).
  • Knowledge of quantitative and qualitative research and analysis methods (mixed and multi) and easy handling of large amounts of quantitative data.
  • Written clarity, including the ability to analyze complex concepts and summarize information.
  • Ability and confidence to make judgments when interpreting ambiguous data.
  • Proven understanding of the principles of emergency preparedness, response and early recovery.
  • Proven understanding of needs assessment in humanitarian crises.
  • Fluent written and oral communication skills in English. Knowledge of Arabic is an advantage and desirable.
  • Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office suite, especially Excel.
  • Familiarity with qualitative and quantitative analysis tools such as Atlas, nVivo, SPSS, R or other relevant tools as well as data visualization tools such as Power BI is desirable.
