Microsoft Purview sensitivity labeling provides efficient and powerful features to protect your data. This protection focuses on data encryption and preventing oversharing. The labels can then be used as conditions in other solutions, such as Microsoft Purview Data Loss Prevention (DLP) and Microsoft Purview Insider Risk Management.

The traditional ‘crawl-walk-run’ approach is often difficult or slow to adopt for the following reasons:

• Encryption concerns impacting end users and line-of-business applications
• Limited adoption by using only manual labeling and/or automatic labeling

Traditionally, we educate users about when to label or attempt to auto-label what needs to be protected. With this approach, protection is enforced by default and you educate users on how to manage exceptions such as external sharing.

Deriving Teams and SharePoint site labeling from file labels allows you to reach high labeling volumes with limited end-user interaction. This will also achieve a thoughtful approach that will help overcome traditional challenges.

To achieve this, the detailed guide provides a list of recommended labels that are suitable for most organizations and maximize the potential of Microsoft Information Protection (MIP), and a list of activities to achieve this through the following blueprint.

At a high level, these guidelines:

• Quickly set up basic features to protect new and updated content in Microsoft 365.
• Fast track by protecting priority content
• Repeat to protect stored historical data
• Extend protection to Microsoft 365 and beyond

This guidance can also be used to secure your environment for internal oversharing, helping accelerate your organization’s familiarity with enterprise search and Microsoft 365 Copilot. Copilot responses are also inherited from the highest priority sensitivity label.
