PhD Scholarship: Quantum Sensing: Join the prestigious Swiss Nanoscience Institute PhD School and receive a fully funded 4-year PhD fellowship in the Biomolecular Nano-Dynamics group at the University of Basel, Switzerland. The fellowship offers the opportunity to work on state-of-the-art quantum sensing of biomolecules using nitrogen vacancy (NV) color centers in diamond and single-photon fluorescence measurements.

Eligibility/Qualification:

• MSc degree in Physics or Physical Chemistry with excellent grades
• Previous experience in optics and fluorescence spectroscopy techniques, quantum sensing, single molecule experiments and interpretation, advanced data analysis, coding, modeling and machine learning
• High motivation and curiosity about fundamental questions and method development
• Independent analytical thinking and systematic working methods
• Excellent experimental problem-solving skills and perseverance
• Good knowledge of English (speaking and writing)

Job description:
In this interdisciplinary PhD project, the successful candidate will:

• Build an optically detected magnetic resonance spectrometer (ODMR) based on state-of-the-art equipment
• Detect single particles and single photons to develop new fluorescence metrics
• Develop a series of biocompatible experiments to detect protein molecules and their chemical stimuli
• Contribution to single-molecule NMR of biomolecules based on advances in optical quantum sensing with NV centers
