PhD Fellowship in Photosynthesis: The Yao Group at the Department of Chemistry, University of Basel, offers a fully funded PhD fellowship in the field of artificial photosynthesis, supported by the Swiss Nanoscience Institute (SNI). This interdisciplinary project aims to explore artificial photosynthesis at subzero temperatures within cryoprotective lipidic mesophase nanocontainment. The successful candidate will join a dynamic research team working at the interface of chemistry, soft matter and nanotechnology to develop new strategies for efficient artificial photosynthesis under extreme conditions.

Title: Doctoral student

Research area: Artificial photosynthesis

Location: University of Basel with regular stays at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI)

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • A Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Chemistry, physics, materials science, nanotechnology or a related field.
  • Solid knowledge of physical chemistry, preferably also photochemistry, biophysics and material characterization.
  • Experience with CO2 fixation and nano-encapsulation is an advantage.
  • Knowledge of advanced analytical methods such as spectroscopy, scattering and microscopy.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, creativity, strong motivation, self-management and the ability to work independently and in a team.
  • Strong communication skills in English, both written and oral.

Job description:

  • Conduct experimental research on artificial photosynthesis in nanoconfinements.
  • Use scattering, spectroscopy, microscopy and other analytical techniques to investigate photochemical and photophysical processes.
  • Collaborate with researchers from the University of Basel and PSI and contribute to interdisciplinary projects.
  • Present research results at international conferences and publish the results in influential scientific journals.
