PhD Fellowship in Microstructure Induced Failure: The International Max Planck Research School for Sustainable Metallurgy (IMPRS SusMet) offers a fully funded PhD position for students from developing countries in the area of “Throughput Atomistic Simulations of Microstructure-Induced Failures”.
Fully funded PhD fellowship for high-throughput atomistic simulations of microstructure-induced defects

Designation: Doctoral student (m/f/d)

Research area: The focus of the research project is on improving the lifetime of materials by identifying weak points for the generation of damage in the microstructure and by developing processing and alloying strategies to enhance or eliminate them using high-throughput, large-scale atomistic simulations with machine learning potential.

Location: Max Planck Institute for Sustainable Materials, Düsseldorf, Germany

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • Excellent Master’s degree in physics, materials science or a related field
  • Knowledge about the Microstructure and mechanical properties of metals
  • Proven programming skills, for example in Python
  • Very good knowledge of English
  • Ideally previous experience with atomistic simulations, e.g. with LAMMPS
  • You have not lived in Germany in the last 15 months
  • Master’s degree not older than six years
  • No promotion completed yet.

Job description: The selected candidate will work in the Microstructure and Mechanics group of the Computational Materials Design department, supervised by Prof. E. Bitzek, Dr. J. Janßen and Dr. J. Best. The focus of the research will be on performing high-throughput, large-scale atomistic simulations with machine learning potential on realistic microstructures under different loading conditions.

How to apply:
Interested candidates should send the following documents to susmet@mpie.de:

  • Motivational letter
  • CV
  • Bachelor and Master certificates and grade overview
  • Certificate of very good English language skills (IELTS, TOEFL or similar)
  • A letter of recommendation from one of your university teachers on the DAAD form
