PhD Fellowship in Anthropology of Medicine: The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of Maastricht University is offering a fully funded PhD fellowship in Anthropology of Medicine. This fellowship offers an enthusiastic and creative individual an exceptional opportunity to engage in interdisciplinary research on clinical waste practices in hospitals. The successful candidate will be immersed in an international, collaborative and innovative research environment, contribute to cutting-edge ethnographic methods and make a significant societal impact on healthcare sustainability.

Designation: PhD student

Research area: Anthropology of Medicine – Clinical Waste Practices

Location: Maastricht, Netherlands, with fieldwork at selected clinical sites worldwide (mainly in Ghana)

Eligibility/Qualification:

  • Completed Master’s degree in relevant areas such as Anthropology, sociology or science and technology studies until 31 August 2024
  • Ethnographic fieldwork experience
  • Good knowledge of English (level C1, academic English)
  • Openness to creative methods and willingness to relocate to Maastricht or the surrounding area

Job description:
The selected PhD student will actively contribute to the Make Do Medicine project funded by the European Research Council. Tasks will include:

  • Setting up a personalized research project in collaboration with the Principal Investigator (PI)
  • Planning and conducting a 10-month fieldwork placement in a hospital, community health centre and/or rural clinic in Ghana (or other relevant location, if suitable and accessible for the project)
  • Co-author of publications and creation of digital sensor material to complement the project’s open dataset
  • Active participation in group meetings, events, workshops and optional teaching activities

  • A 2-page CV with publication details (if available) and contact information of two references
  • A two-page document that answers the following questions:
  1. Why do you want to do a doctorate?
  2. How does this promotion relate to your previous work, your interests and/or your future goals?
  3. What is your personal relationship to DIY practices, making, reusing or upcycling?
  4. What do you consider to be an important research topic with regard to clinical waste?

The first interviews will take place on Wednesday 11 September 2024. Further interviews will be conducted as required. Shortlisted candidates will be given a brief brief and a reference check will be part of the application process.
