Full-time work and expenditure subsidies (Finland)

Subsidy Type

• There are two types of grants: working grants and expenditure grants. You can apply for both a practice grant and a spending grant in the same application. Examples include artwork combined with the purchase of a pottery kiln, doctoral thesis research combined with the use of laboratory services, and artwork incorporated into a dance production combined with costume costs and other production costs. Grants may only be awarded for work or expenditure.
  • Work grants: For scientific or artistic work. Individuals can apply for a work grant on their own or as part of a working group. Work grants are tax-exempt up to a fixed amount each year (National Artist Grant).
  • Expenditure grants: Awarded to cover costs associated with activities such as archaeological digs, theater productions, music masterclasses or the cost of purchasing individual tools.
  • Multi-Year Work Grants: The Cultural Foundation also awards multi-year grants for individual work. Because only a limited number of multi-year grants are awarded, many of those who apply are likely to receive shorter grants instead.

Eligibility Criteria

• Eligible applicants include all Finnish citizens, individuals and organizations residing or active in Finland. Others may also be eligible if their application demonstrates clear and strong ties to Finland or Finnish culture. Applications for persons under 15 years of age must be completed by a legal representative in the name of the applicant.
• For the October application, you can apply for a grant through:
  • Individuals for personal business, expenditures, or both. Individual applicants may submit only one application in a single application round. However, you may be a member of a working group (rather than a lead) on a project other than the one that is the subject of your individual application.
  • A working group made up of several people for the purpose of group members’ work, project expenditures, or both. The applicant is designated as the head of the group and is responsible for disbursing subsidies to the Cultural Foundation and, if necessary, to the Farmers’ Social Insurance Agency MELA, the Finnish Tax Agency and other members. of the group.
  • Arts Working Groups can also apply for a Work Grant for the creator of a project if the creator is part of that Arts Working Group.
  • Members of a working group cannot apply for individual grants for the same project in separate applications. Only one application may be submitted for the same purpose.
  • Registered organizations (associations, cooperatives, etc.) to expend business expenses such as labor costs
  • Grants will not be awarded for the core activities of organizations that are inherently publicly funded (e.g. universities or city theaters receiving government transfers). However, short-term individual projects may be subsidized. Typically, organizations that receive discretionary state or local grant funding are eligible.
  • If your organization is not registered, applications should be submitted to the Working Group.

Ineligibility Criteria

• Grants will not be awarded:
  • through wage increases or incentive subsidies.
  • on social grounds
  • Available for basic (bachelor’s and master’s) degree students for work grants or student exchanges involved in their studies.
  • For overseas postdoctoral research, excluding visits lasting less than one semester (less than 6 months)
  • To cover general printing costs
  • for internship
