Dark Mode in Word for Mac

Hi, I’m Ali Forelli, a program manager on the Word team. I work on accessibility features. I’m happy to announce that Dark Mode is now available in Word for Mac, and it’s even more comprehensive. Previously, you could use Word with a dark ribbon and toolbar, but your document color was still bright white. Now, Dark Mode in Word also offers a dark canvas!

Dark mode in Word

As we spend more time in front of our screens, it has become increasingly important to reduce eye strain and accommodate our sensitivity to light. We have expanded our Black Office theme to include a document canvas. Earlier this year, We have released this feature to Windows users.And we’re excited to bring this feature to Mac desktop users.

How it works

To turn on dark mode in Word Canvas, you must enable dark mode in Mac OS. setting > general > figure > dark.

When dark mode is enabled, you can toggle the black and white page background color by selecting: see > Mode switching On the ribbon.

When you use Dark Mode, you will notice that the page color, which was previously white, is now a dark gray/black. The colors within the document also change to match the new color contrast. Reds, blues, yellows, and other colors change slightly to tone down the overall effect of the color palette and make it look more visually pleasing with the new dark background.

Want to keep your canvas white?

A dark canvas doesn’t convey how your document will print or how it will look when your collaborators open it. To quickly see the default view (a white canvas), use: Mode switching Click the button on the ribbon to flip the page color to white.

Don’t you want to see a dark canvas? word > Preferences > general > Personalization And choose Turn off dark mode Option to disable both the dark Office theme and dark page colors or Dark mode makes the page color white. Option to continue using dark mode with a white page background.

effectiveness

This feature is available to Beta Channel users running Version 16.49 (Build 21050201) or later.

We usually release features over a period of time to make sure everything is working smoothly. This also applies to Insiders. Since we release slowly to a larger number of Insiders, we highlight features that you may not have. Likewise, we sometimes remove elements to improve things. In rare cases, we also have the option to completely remove a feature from the product.
