Hello, Microsoft 365 Insiders! We’re excited to announce that you can now add more creativity and expression to your Teams messaging with custom emoji and reactions.

Custom emoji and reactions in Microsoft Teams

Let your personality shine in Teams! Now you can upload your own custom emoji to personalize your messages and reflect your team’s unique culture. Custom emojis and reactions in Teams are a great way to effectively convey status or share lighthearted messages or emotions. Up to 5,000 custom emojis are allowed per tenant.

How it works

Access custom emoticons

  1. Open a Teams chat or channel and select the emoji icon in the chat box.

  2. At the top of the window, select: Emoticon Menu options.

  3. Select the emoji icon with a circle surrounded by a dotted line in the lower right corner of the window.

    This will display: custom This is the emoticon library section. Choose the one you want from these options and insert it into your chat.

  4. To view or delete the creator of an emoji (if you have permission), right-click on the emoji.

Upload new emoticons

  1. If you have permission to add emoticons to your organization custom In the emoji library section shown above, click the plus (+) icon. A file explorer window will open where you can select a new image or GIF file to use as your custom emoji. (You can upload a JPEG, PNG, or GIF file. Small, square images work best.) memo: (Currently, uploading custom emojis and reactions is not possible on Android.)

  2. To name your new custom emoticon, enter a name. name Select the box and choose Add emoticon.

  3. If the upload is successful, a confirmation message will appear on the screen (displayed in the lower left corner).

Managing Custom Emoticon Features (for admins)

  1. Go to the Teams admin center. memo: To access the Teams admin center, sign in at: admin.team.microsoft.com.
  2. Below Message SettingsYou can turn the custom emoji feature on or off for your entire tenant (it’s on by default).

  3. To grant users the ability to create and delete emojis, adjust the settings in the Messaging policy group. (By default, everyone can create custom emojis. Only admins can delete them by default.)

Requirements

By default, all new custom emojis and reactions are visible and available to use if they have been added by an admin as part of the tenant. Admins can use the Teams Admin Center controls to turn off custom emojis or choose which users can create or delete them.

effectiveness

To use this feature, you must be a member of the Teams Public Preview or Microsoft 365 Targeted release and use the new Teams clients for Windows, Mac, or web.

To enable Teams clients for public preview, your IT admin must enable: Show preview feature According to the update policy. Learn more.

For targeted releases, global administrators can go to the Microsoft 365 admin center and grant access to selected individuals or to the entire organization. Learn more.
