The Community Film Festival Opening Ceremony Fund provides grants to existing community-led film festivals to enhance their opening ceremonies and support communities to celebrate and connect through film.

  • The objectives of this program are:
    • Support film festivals across the state with Opening Night events.
    • It alleviates the financial burden on small and mid-sized film festivals that demonstrate strong local origins and foundations.
    • It complements existing funding available for film and community festivals across the state, including Screen NSW’s Audience Development Fund and Destination NSW’s Regional Events Fund.
    • Build audience and community engagement
    • Impacting audiences and communities across NSW
    • Support influential festivals that evolve to be relevant to future audiences and the screen industry.
    • Helping marginalized communities tell their stories
    • Showcasing NSW’s rich cultural diversity.

Funding Information

  • The maximum grant amount per applicant is $5,000.
  • Organizations applying for funding should secure other sources of income or in-kind support, if possible. Income can come from sources such as sponsorships from other organizations, grants or subsidies, ticket sales revenue, fundraising, and other activities.

Eligible Projects

  • Funding is available to support:
    • rent a place
    • Interpreter (Language and/or Australian)
    • Costs associated with hosting a Welcome to Country event
    • Event marketing and promotion costs
    • Culturally appropriate hospitality (e.g. catering) and entertainment (e.g. artist fees for bands/musicians, etc.)
    • Transportation (including reasonable travel expenses for key creatives to attend speaking opportunities on the opening night film)
    • Licensing fees for opening night movies
    • Equipment Rental
    • Documentation (photograph or video)
    • Other event costs associated with the opening night celebration.

Ineligible Projects

  • Funding for the Community Film Festival Opening Night program is not available in the following cases:
    • Cost of alcoholic beverages
    • Costs associated with the ongoing programming of the festival
    • Activities that received funding from Screen NSW or Create NSW for the same activity in the same financial year.
    • Costs incurred prior to execution of the funding agreement
    • Development of video content production such as festival trailers
    • Awards or competition sections of film festivals
    • Operating expenses
    • Costs for current/present employees
    • Other expenses not related to the opening night event

Qualification criteria

  • Funding for this program is available to:
    • Organizations including companies and non-profit corporations, cooperatives, trusts or local government authorities
    • A consortium or group of organizations working collaboratively
  • Applicants must be an Australian organisation with an ABN.
  • To receive funding, the organization must be legally established and financially stable.
    Applicants must submit documentation proving their legal status.
  • Applicants must be an Australian-based organisation and comply with the general eligibility requirements under the Screen NSW Terms and Conditions.

Disqualification criteria

  • Applications for funding will not be accepted in the following cases:
    • Individuals, partnerships or groups of individuals and unincorporated organizations
    • Government departments and agencies, primary and secondary schools, tertiary institutions and TAFE colleges
    • Creates NSW funding recipients who have not previously screened NSW or met funding criteria or have passed the deadline for obtaining previous funding.
    • Festival receives over $150,000 in contribution from the NSW Government
    • Festivals with an annual budget of more than $1,500,000
    • A multidisciplinary or cultural festival where screenings and screen culture account for less than 75% of program activities.
