With these integrations, we add important tools for optimizing your workloads, whether they are large databases requiring high storage capacity or performance-intensive, mission-critical applications. Not all applications require the performance of directly attached storage, and many workloads, such as backup and disaster recovery use cases or other capacity-intensive workloads, can benefit from more cost-effective scalable storage solutions. Azure Elastic SAN can be deployed and connected directly from the Azure portal, and at $0.06-0.08 per GiB per month (based on current pricing in US-East), it is the lowest cost per GiB storage option for AVS while still providing scalable performance. How to optimize price/performance with Azure Elastic SAN

When you set up an Elastic SAN, you create a pool of resources that are shared between “volumes” within the SAN. Each of these volumes can be exposed as a data store to the AVS SDDC. Elastic SAN volumes share the performance provisioned at the SAN level, but individual volumes have their own performance limits (see table below). By design, individual volume limits are high to accommodate bursts of traffic for specific volumes. If you need more than 80,000 IOPS, you can spread the workload across multiple volumes and place them on different data stores.

Resource pools in Elastic SAN consist of 1 TiB units, namely “base units” and “capacity dedicated units”. Basic devices provide both storage capacity and performance, while capacity-only devices provide only storage capacity. In practice, you can start adding base units until you reach the desired level of performance and then add additional capacity-only units if your storage capacity requirements are not yet met.
