July 2024 Updates and Announcements Major version upgrade for Azure Database for MySQL Flexible Server in Burstable service tier (General availability) You can now perform major version upgrades directly on your Burstable service tier-based flexible servers using the Azure portal with just a few clicks! This feature release removes the previous limitation of having to manually upgrade to General Purpose or Business Critical tiers, perform the version upgrade, and then downgrade the server. The key benefits of this feature are: Smooth upgrade process, improved stability, and effective cost management. Learn more: Announcement Blog | documentation | Demo Video Azure Key Vault Managed Hardware Security Module (HSM) Support for Customer Managed Keys (CMK) (General Availability) Azure Key Vault Managed Hardware Security Module (HSM) is a fully managed, highly available, single-tenant, standards-compliant cloud service that can protect cryptographic keys for cloud applications. FIPS 140-2 Level 3 Verified HSM. Ensures data residency by ensuring that data is stored and processed only in the region where the HSM is hosted. With the latest feature update, you can now use: Self-HSM-backed encryption keys to protect data at rest in MySQL – Flexible server instances. You can use the Bring Your Own Key (BYOK) feature of CMK to create HSM-backed keys and import encryption keys from physical on-premises HSMs while maintaining full control over the keys. A single table file contains 8TB! PreviouslyThe service supports up to 4TB in a single table file. This increase in storage capacity reduces the need for table partitioning and simplifies database management. Additionally, the increased storage limit allows customers to scale tables more efficiently without compromising performance. (provisional*) On-demand backup and export This feature provides the ability to export current physical backups of a server to an Azure storage account (Azure Blob Storage) using Azure CLI commands. After export, these backups can be used for data recovery, migration, data redundancy and availability, or auditing. Learn more. Public Preview General availability CY24 Q3 virtual canary The Virtual Canary feature is an interesting solution for Azure MySQL users who prioritize staying at the forefront of technology by ensuring that their servers are always running the latest version. Servers that opt in to Virtual Canary will receive maintenance updates earlier. You can also leverage this feature to perform additional layers of update testing on your development, test, or staging servers to avoid workload-specific issues such as application-level compatibility issues. This feature therefore provides an efficient way to manage updates, align test and production environments, and maintain operational stability with minimal disruption. – Public Preview CY24 Q3 Maintaining near-zero downtime of HA servers This feature is designed to significantly reduce maintenance downtime on HA enabled servers, ensuring that in most cases maintenance downtime is between 40 and 60 seconds. This feature is essential for enterprises that require high availability and minimal disruption in their database operations. Learn more. Public Preview General Availability CY24 Q4 Discover and assess MySQL in Azure Migrate This feature allows you to: Azure Migration Discover MySQL servers in your environment, identify and assess compatibility with Azure Database for MySQL, and get compute and storage SKU recommendations along with costs. Personal Preview Public Preview CY24 Q4 Long-term storage of backups Previously, with Azure Database for MySQL, you could maintain: Automatic Backup and On-demand backup For ~ Up to 35 days. Long-term retention now lets you retain backups for up to 10 years, helping you better meet audit and compliance requirements. Learn more. Public Preview General AvailabilityCY24 Q4 Error Log (Server Log) This feature allows you to keep MySQL error log files in the following locations: Server Logs You can download them for up to 7 days. These error logs can help you efficiently identify and troubleshoot performance and stability issues, and proactively detect and respond to unauthorized access attempts, failed login attempts, and other security-related events. Public Preview General AvailabilityCY24 Q4 CMK Support for Accelerated Logs Accelerated log, Available in the Business Critical service tier and designed for mission-critical workloads, this feature increases application throughput by up to two times (2x) at no additional cost.
