Stay tuned for the 19th annual National Student Competition for Canadian students from Kindergarten to Grade 12.

    • If you’re having trouble thinking about what to write about, take a look at these short story topics:
    • Think of life as someone or something else. Try writing from that person or thing’s perspective and imagine what that person’s life would be like.
    • Bring a mysterious person to life. I see a man/woman/child across the street. Why are you there? What is their secret?
    • There are scratches on the floor, a broken window across the street, and a dent in my dad’s car. How did it get there? Is there a logical explanation or a more fantastical explanation?
    • Think of a close friend or family member. Go on an adventure.
    • Think about fables and fairy tales. Create your own.
    • Look at pictures in newspapers or magazines. Create a completely new story to go with it.
    • Write about something funny that happens when you least expect it.

    • Favorite sport or hobby.
    • School: homework, subjects, teachers, peers, etc.
    • Emotions: Describe sad days, happy days, etc.

Product information

  • More than $5,000 in prize money will be awarded to participating schools and students.
  • Bonus Prize: Schools will receive one bonus entry for each student entry submitted.
  • Each contest:
    • First Prize (School): $300
    • Second Prize (School): $200
    • 3rd Prize (School): $100

Eligibility Criteria

  • Each year they hold two contests that are open to Canadian students from Kindergarten to Grade 12.
  • Educators may want to use one or both of these contests as projects to fit their English curriculum, or students may participate on their own. However, you must provide school information and contact information to verify that you are a student and to maintain the contest. fair).

Application Requirements

  • All works must be original and checked for plagiarism.
  • Entries must not have been previously published (online postings must be removed prior to submission).
  • Please do not submit work that has already been sent to other contests or publishers for consideration (no simultaneous submissions).
  • Students may submit one piece (one poem and one story) to each contest.
  • They prefer to submit their entries online. If you are mailing your entries, each entry must be typed on 8.5″ x 11″ white paper using 11 point Arial (or another plain font) with black ink, no graphics.
  • Peer editing is permitted (same grade or lower).
  • Parents/teachers/eldest siblings are welcome to type up a junior writer’s work, but while doing so, they must not make any corrections other than spelling necessary for comprehension.
  • The poem must be no more than 32 lines.
  • Short stories must be 450 words or less. Must be fiction or fictionalized (rename real characters). Do not use essays, reports, or fanfiction.
  • In this case, the entry must be written in English.
  • All mailed entries must be accompanied by an entry form or reasonable facsimile.
  • Please keep a copy of all submitted work as nothing can be returned.
  • Any style or theme is welcome. However, remind students that they should always consider their audience and that books can be found in elementary school libraries.
  • Any homeschooled student can participate and win any student award. However, homeschools do not receive compensation on the educator/school part.
  • If you are admitted through a tutor or tutoring program outside of your regular school, please enter the contact information for the tutor or program outside of your regular school. Your teacher contact information must be reachable at the school address you provide.
