Applications for the United States Institute for Secondary Educators and Scholars (SUSI) fellowships are now open. This intensive graduate-level academic program provides a mid-career experience for highly motivated and experienced secondary school educators and administrators, typically between the ages of 30 and 50. , an opportunity to deepen your understanding of American society, culture, values, and institutions with university faculty and other scholars.

The goal of the program is to strengthen the curriculum and improve the quality of American education in secondary schools and other educational institutions abroad.

SUSI for Secondary Educators is held at various educational institutions throughout the United States. Each institute includes a four-week academic residency and, when conditions permit, a one-week integrated study trip to another location in the United States. Residencies take place on U.S. university and college campuses and consist of a balanced series of activities including lectures, panels, seminar discussions, readings, workshops, field visits, meetings with practitioners in the field, and cultural activities.

Subject areas

  • SUSI for Scholars is held at various colleges, universities, and educational institutions throughout the United States. Each institute includes a four-week academic residency and up to two weeks of integrated training trips elsewhere in the United States.
  • SUSI for Scholars is organized around the following topics in American Studies:
    • American politics and political thought
    • modern american literature
    • Journalism and Media
    • American Culture, Identity, and Society
    • American Economy and Sustainable Development
    • US foreign policy

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants must meet the following requirements:
    • Proven English proficiency
    • Limited prior experience in the United States
    • Have a firm plan to enhance, update, or develop courses and/or educational materials with an American studies focus or component.
    • Has a special interest in the program’s subject area, as evidenced by past scholarship, achievements, and professional positions.
    • If you are not a U.S. citizen or permanent resident of the United States
    • Not a relative of a U.S. Embassy or Fulbright Committee employee
    • Be willing to interact respectfully with fellow participants who represent diverse backgrounds and perspectives.

Application Requirements

  • All participants must fully participate in the program.
  • There is little time for personal activities not related to the program.
  • The Institute is not a research program.
  • Participants are required to attend all lectures and structured activities and complete assigned readings. Family members and/or friends are not permitted to accompany program participants.
