Eligibility/Qualification:

  • A Master’s degree (or equivalent) in a relevant field such as Biology, bioinformatics, plant physiology, genetics or statistics.
  • Good knowledge of English (meets certain language requirements).
  • Basic knowledge of boreal forest ecosystems is desirable.
  • Experience with remote sensing methods is an advantage.
  • Knowledge of Swedish and possession of a Swedish or international driving license are desirable.
  • Special consideration is given to personal suitability.

Job description:
The PhD student will address the challenges that climate change poses to Swedish forests, focusing in particular on the impact of drought on seedling survival and forest productivity. The research will be conducted in seed orchards and controlled greenhouse environments, using advanced techniques such as transcriptomics, genomics, metabolomics and remote sensing. The aim is to uncover the genetic mechanisms underlying drought tolerance in pine and spruce and to develop tools to assess these traits.

The position is industry-based, with employment at Sveaskog, which gives the candidate practical work experience. The PhD student will be supervised by a team of experts from SLU, Umeå University and Sveaskog.
