Defender VPN Safer public Wi-Fi

Public Wi-Fi is usually free, easy, and convenient, but it’s not always secure. As they say, there is no ‘free lunch’.

Microsoft Defender for Personal¹ We introduced VPN late last year to provide a safer online experience wherever you go.² You can browse without worrying about your personal data being intercepted over insecure Wi-Fi connections.

The evolution of VPNs

Over the past few months, we’ve made it easier to stay safer online with automatic detection and notification of unsecured Wi-Fi, expanded Privacy Protection to support all device platforms, and rolled out Privacy Protection features to more countries. I did it. Please see the summary below for the latest information on privacy.

What’s new?

Now, we’ve expanded Defender’s privacy coverage with the updates below.

1. auto detection³ For added safety, the Defender app provides notifications about unsecured Wi-Fi connections with the ability to turn on a virtual private network (VPN).⁴
2. VPN for Privacy is now available on all supported device platforms, including Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS.
3. The feature is available in more countries, including the US, UK, Germany, and Canada. And more countries are coming soon. We’re adding privacy features in 10 countries.⁵ It will soon be released in Europe, Asia and LATAM regions.

Unsecure Wi-Fi detected

(Available in Defender for Android, iOS, and Windows. Coming soon to macOS)

• These are usually public Wi-Fi hotspots that have weak security encryption, potentially putting your personal data at risk.
• With insecure Wi-Fi notifications, you can seamlessly turn on protection with Defender in just one click.
• Support to automatically enable VPN on public Wi-Fi is coming soon.

Enhanced mobile detection with suspicious Wi-Fi detection

(Available in Defender for Android and iOS. Coming soon to Windows and macOS)

Added detection for insecure Wi-Fi (suspicious Wi-Fi). This detection is possible using Defender heuristics, which examine several characteristics of a Wi-Fi hotspot to determine if it is suspicious. Just like insecure Wi-Fi, you can also get notified about insecure Wi-Fi and turn on Defender VPN for added security.

Get started with privacy

1. Download the Defender app

You can download the app from: google play storeand Apple App Store or direct download (If you haven’t already)!

Sign in with your personal Microsoft account (@gmail, @outlook, etc.) linked to your Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscription, or start a one-month trial of Microsoft 365 Family.⁶.

2. Enable Privacy Protection

Open the Defender app and click ‘privacy‘ Select your card and select ‘Get Started’ or ‘Finish Setup’. The setup process is quick and easy, and after that you just have to follow the on-screen instructions. Make sure you are running the latest Defender app version from the Google Play Store/iOS App Store.
