outline

Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced the discontinuation of Amazon Quantum Ledger Database (QLDB) service. This document has been updated. This indicates that QLDB support will end on July 31, 2025. AWS’s decision has led many customers to seek alternative solutions for their ledger database needs.

Introducing Ledger in Azure SQL

AWS offers Aurora PostgreSQL for Audit Use Cases As an alternative to QLDB for common ledger database use cases, Aurora provides detailed audit logging and persistent log retention, but does not include cryptographic verifiability.

Microsoft offers excellent alternatives through: Ledger features in Azure SQL. provides similar functionality to ensure data integrity. Encryption VerificationLeverage the full power of Azure SQL. Ledger is a feature that brings the power of blockchain to Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, and SQL Server. Ledger enables you to build trust between multiple business entities while maintaining the simplicity and performance of a relational database. Data is centrally managed, and you can cryptographically prove to other parties, such as auditors or business partners, that the data is trustworthy and has not been tampered with.

More information about Ledgers in Azure SQL and SQL Server can be found here: Director’s Document.

Key features of Ledger

  • Capture and encrypt data changes to make them tamper-proof and verifiable.
  • Use the same SQL environment you already know.
  • Easy to deploy and maintain.
  • There are no additional costs.

Immigration assistance

Amazon QLDB uses a document-oriented data model. The complexity lies in normalizing the data during the migration, converting the document model to a relational model, and handling any changes to the document model. Microsoft can assist organizations in migrating from Amazon QLDB to Azure SQL Database. For more information and to begin the migration process, organizations are encouraged to contact Microsoft Support or their Microsoft Account Manager.

conclusion

While QLDB is being phased out, Microsoft offers a great alternative that allows users to host their data with cryptographic immutability, ensuring compliance with strict data integrity standards. Ledger in Azure SQL is a powerful alternative that easily integrates into your Azure SQL environment.
