Open Call for Applications for Hungary-Israel Scientific Research Program

Under the Hungary-Israel Scientific Cooperation Agreement, the Hungarian National Research, Development and Innovation Office (NRDI) and the Israeli Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology (MOST) have decided to provide financial support and are happy to invite researchers and scientists from both countries to submit joint proposals for research projects to be conducted jointly by researchers.

The purpose of this program is to support the development of scientific and technological cooperation between Hungarian and Israeli researchers, and to strengthen scientific partnerships between research groups from both countries. To this end, it is necessary to establish a bilateral research network, strengthen research cooperation, and promote knowledge exchange between Hungarian and Israeli scientists.

Main areas of interest

  • The Hungarian-Israeli research team invites joint proposals for applied research projects in the following areas:
    • Supporting prevention, treatment and management systems to maintain healthy living within the following focus areas:
      • Innovation in healthy living and disease prevention.
      • Improve quality of life in older age.
      • Innovative diagnostic and therapeutic interventions and therapies (drug discovery, immunology, medical device and instrument development).
    • Supporting the development of green transition and circular economy within the focus areas of the following thematic areas:
      • Agricultural innovation and water resource management, effective protection from natural disasters and extreme weather conditions.
      • Increase energy efficiency, accelerate the transition to clean energy, and leverage indigenous energy sources.
      • Sustainable and smart mobility.
    • We support the digital transformation of economy and society within the following focus areas:
      • Artificial intelligence, quantum technology.
      • Smart grid, autonomous systems.

Funding Information

  • The maximum funding for each single project will be up to ILS 568,000 for three years from the Israeli side. The maximum funding for each single project from the Hungarian side will be up to EUR 142,000 for three years.

Qualification criteria

  • The project must be carried out in collaboration between Hungarian and Israeli scientific research teams.
  • Proposals must be for research projects in one of the key areas of collaboration detailed in Section A and its subtopics, and must meet the required technical readiness level (TRL2-4).
  • Each joint research team must be led by a principal investigator (PI) from each country.
  • The PI on each side must be affiliated with an academic or research institution (“Affiliated Institution”), or an emeritus professor continuing his/her research in partnership with an Affiliated Institution. The Affiliated Institution is determined in each country as follows:
    • In Israel:
      • An accredited institution of higher education under the Higher Education Act (5718-1958) or
      • Research institutions that are non-profit organizations, governmental companies, or governmental units. For the purposes of this call, a “research institution” in Israel is a research institution whose primary activity is the advancement of cutting-edge scientific knowledge, which has adequate infrastructure and equipment, and which employs researchers who publish articles related to their research in leading scientific journals and present their research at international symposia.
    • In Hungary:
      • Institutions eligible to participate:
        • Non-profit and other not-for-profit organizations, with GFO codes 551, 552, 559, 562, 563, 569, 599 or 931, recognized by the State according to the Law CCIV on National Higher Education of 2011, designated as non-state-owned higher education institutions and considered as research and knowledge transfer institutions according to Article 2(83) of European Commission Regulation 651/2014/EU.
        • Among the budgetary institutions and institutions governed by budgetary rules, institutions with GFO codes 311,312,322,341,342,381 or 382 that are considered research and knowledge transfer institutions according to Article 2(83) of European Commission Regulation 651/2014/EU.
