Applications are now open for the Ontario Arts Council program, which supports the creation, exploration, development, production and presentation of French-language theatre in Ontario.

Priority

  • This program mainly supports:
    • A project that promotes the development of an individual’s artistic approach or an artistic approach specific to an organization or group.
    • A project to encourage the development and advancement of French-language theatre practice in Ontario.

Category

  • There are three categories in this program:
    • Creative/Exploratory: Projects involving artistic research, early exploration or development of a dramatic concept or project; projects focusing on the early stages of conception of a new play, including writing and creative workshops; and projects involving public presentation of this exploration. Projects in the Creative/Exploratory category do not necessarily require a public presentation.
    • Development: Projects that are in the advanced stages of development and are close to production. Projects in the Development category must include some form of accessible presentation or workshop, either by invitation or open to the public, as part of the process.
    • Production: A production project that prepares and presents a single-play production to an audience. This grant will contribute to artistic, technical, administrative, production, and marketing/promotional costs. Co-productions are also possible, but applicants must include a co-production agreement or agreement.

Funding Information

  • Creation/Exploration: Up to $5,000
  • Maximum development amount: $15,000
  • Maximum production amount: $20,000

Qualification criteria

  • Professional theatre artist based in Ontario.
  • A temporary group and not-for-profit theatre organization comprised of professional theatre artists, with at least 50% of its members residing in Ontario.
  • A non-profit organization based in Ontario that produces professional theatre.

Disqualification criteria

  • Colleges, universities and local governments.
  • Organizations receiving:
    • Or an operating grant from one of the French-language arts programs, namely:
      • Visual Arts, Media Arts and Crafts: Organizing and Running Centers for Autonomous Artists in the French-speaking World
      • How French Broadcasting Works
      • Working on the French version
      • Operation of a French-speaking arts service organization
      • Operating a French-speaking theater
      • Or other operating grants that are not obligated to serve one or more of the CAO’s priority groups.
