Introducing new layout options in OneNote on Windows

Hello, Microsoft 365 Insiders! I’m Greg MacEachern, a product manager on the OneNote team. I’m excited to announce new ways to navigate your notebooks, sections, and pages in OneNote for Windows.

Introducing new layout options in OneNote for Windows

If you like the left-hand layout in OneNote for the web, OneNote for Mac, or OneNote for iPad, you’ll be happy to hear that this experience is now available in OneNote for Windows clients! vertical tab Layout options give you a navigation experience similar to other Microsoft 365 apps and services, like Outlook and Teams.

How it works

• Clicking sound View > Tab Layout > vertical tabYour notebooks and pages will now appear on the left.
• If you prefer to have your section tabs at the top of your canvas, you can easily switch back by selecting: see > Tab layout > Horizontal tab.

Scenarios to try

• ~ inside vertical tab To change the layout, click the three vertical lines button at the top of the notebook list to collapse the notebook list and see your notes more clearly!
• Try using ‘Full Page View’ for a fully immersive note-taking experience by clicking the double arrows in the upper right corner of the canvas. Learn more.

In which versions of OneNote is this feature available?

• This new option is available in OneNote on Windows. ~ No Available for OneNote for Windows 10.

How do I get the OneNote app?

How do I move the page list and notebook list to the other side of the app window?

• When using the horizontal tab layout, the page list and notebook list may appear only on the right.
• To move to a different location, you must first switch to the horizontal tab. Then File > Options > DisplayThen select the option you want Horizontal tab layout.
• Currently the right layout is not supported when using the vertical tab layout.

This feature is rolling out to Insiders using Version 2302 (Build 16124.20000) or later.

memo: This feature is currently only available in OneNote for Windows. It is not available in OneNote for Windows 10.

Features are released over time to ensure everything works smoothly. They are released slowly to a larger number of Insiders, highlighting features you may not have. Sometimes we remove elements based on your feedback to make them even better. This is rare, but we also have the option to completely remove a feature from the product, even if you, as an Insider, had the opportunity to try it out.
