Transcribe comes to Word for Windows

Hello, Microsoft 365 Insiders! I’m Abhinav Santoshi, a Product Manager on the Office Voice team. I’m excited to announce that your favorite Transcribe feature is now available in Word for Windows.

Transcribe in Word for Windows

Are you tired of manually transcribing audio recordings of meetings, interviews, and lectures? Look no further! The much-anticipated Transcribe feature is now available in Word for Windows. This feature allows you to separate each speaker individually and convert the speech into a text transcription.

Imagine being able to focus on giving a speech, conducting an interview, recording a lecture, taking class notes, or attending a presentation, and knowing that you can listen to and read the transcript later. The Transcribe feature lets you play back time-stamped audio and edit the transcript to make corrections. Plus, you can save the entire transcript as a Word document or insert snippets into an existing document.

How it works

There are two ways to transcribe speech:

1. Record directly in Word
2. Upload audio file

Record in Word

You can record directly in Word while taking notes, and then transcribe your recording. Word transcribes in the background while you record. Click to see the transcript. Save and copy now button.

1. If this is your first time transcribing, give the Word app permission to use your microphone.How to set up and test a microphone in Windows (microsoft.com)
2. move house > command > Rewrite.

3. at Rewrite Select the following in the window Start recording button.

4. Start a conversation with someone, start a conversation, or start recording a lecture. Speak clearly and make sure the incoming audio is clear.
5. Click when done Save and copy now Click the button to save your recording to OneDrive and start the transcription process.

memo: The OneDrive account where the audio is uploaded will be displayed in the transcription window. Currently, only one new transcription can be created per page.

Upload audio file

You can upload pre-recorded audio files to transcribe the recordings. This is useful for referencing past lectures or training sessions and listening to the content again.

1. move house > command > Rewrite.

2. at Rewrite Select the following in the window Upload audio button.

3. Select an existing audio file in the file selector, then open button.

memo: Transcribe currently supports .wav, .mp4, .m4a and .mp3 formats.

Scenarios to try

Play and pause recording

To pause recording, select: Pause (Active Microphone) button.

To resume recording, select: Record (inactive microphone) button.

Play audio

1. Open and select the Word document containing the transcribed recording. house > command> Rewrite .
2. Press play Click the button to play the recording.

3. Press StopPress the button to stop recording playback.

As the audio plays, relevant transcript sections are highlighted. You can also click on timestamps to recall more context, making it easy to jump to specific moments in the recording.

Adjust volume and playback speed

Relabel speakers or edit sections.

1. The transcription service identifies and distinguishes different speakers, labeling them as Speaker 1, Speaker 2, etc.

   memo : You can edit a speaker label and change all occurrences of that label to something else.

2. You can also edit the contents of a section to correct any problems that may arise during transcription.

at Rewrite You can add the entire manuscript or specific sections to a Word document from the window.

Requirements

• Your Microsoft 365 subscription is active. memo:Entry points to Transcribe are not available to you if you are not a Microsoft 365 subscriber.
• You must have a stable Internet connection.
• Transcribe is not available to GCC/GCC-H/DOD customers.

effectiveness

This feature is rolling out to Beta Channel users running Version 2302 (Build 16107.20000) or later.

Features are released over time to ensure everything works smoothly. We release slowly to a larger number of Insiders, so we highlight features you may not have. Sometimes we remove elements based on your feedback to make it even better. This is rare, but we also have the option to completely remove a feature from the product, even if you, as an Insider, had the opportunity to try it out.
