9 FLIGHT Fellowship Program: ICFO offers up to 9 PhD fellowships under the FLIGHT programme, an MSCA-COFUND PhD initiative focusing on cross-sectoral research training in collaboration with industrial or clinical partners. These positions provide a unique opportunity for highly qualified PhD students to pursue their PhD at ICFO on a variety of research topics.

Authorization/Qualification

  • Must have an internationally recognized Master’s equivalent degree in Mathematics, natural sciences, engineering or medicine in connection with the research activities of the ICFO.
  • The degree must be completed by the start of the PhD program.
  • Must meet the MSCA mobility requirements (must not have resided or carried out his or her main activity in Spain for more than 12 months in the last 3 years).
  • Excellent academic record and previous research experience.
  • Good English knowledge.
  • Must not have a doctorate yet.
  • Previous applicants to the ICFO Doctoral Program may apply if they can demonstrate significant changes in their candidacy.

Selected fellows have the opportunity to choose from three PhD programs:

  1. Clinical Track: Collaboration with clinical partners on projects such as “Transcranial neuromonitoring at the bedside for personalization of pediatric treatment” or “Quantitative assessment of endothelial and microvascular function in intensive care.”
  2. Industrial route: Collaboration with industrial partners on projects such as “Development of QRNGs: Higher rates through weaker assumptions” or “Development of applications and devices based on photonic integrated circuits”.
  3. Improved track: Work with one of ICFO’s 26 research groups on a variety of theoretical and experimental research directions, including attoscience, photovoltaics, quantum optics, medical optics, and more.

Fellows in the clinical and industrial areas spend 6 to 18 months at the respective partner organizations. The program offers extensive training and teaching opportunities and leverages local universities and the ICFO network of excellence.

Suitable candidates are requested to submit the following documents online (in English):

  • Cover letter detailing research interests and motivation, as well as specific projects and research groups of interest.
  • CV including contact details.
  • Scanned copies of complete official academic transcripts and diplomas.
  • European Diploma Supplement for degrees awarded in the EHEA or equivalent documentation for degrees awarded outside the EHEA.
  • Optional standardized test scores (e.g. GRE, TOEFL).
  • Contact details of 2 references who will submit letters of recommendation.
  • Optional indication of mitigating circumstances (e.g. career breaks).
